American Attack on Venezuela Raises Anxieties of Future Greenland Annexation.

The recent American strike in the South American nation and the detention of its president have renewed unease regarding Washington's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the ex-president's political movement have reportedly set their sights on the strategically important landmass in the wake of the events in the southern hemisphere.

Provocative Messages and Diplomatic Outrage

Only hours after the commencement of the Caracas operation, a well-known right-wing commentator, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential aide, posted a symbolic image. The graphic showed Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by single-word caption: "COMING."

This overt suggestion to claim the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the NATO alliance, triggered swift and strong criticism from Denmark's representatives.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is equally Greenland’s and our security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the US work together to guarantee security in the North."

The ambassador further pointed out that the kingdom had substantially boosted its defence spending this year, earmarking a large amount specifically for Northern and regional security. "Furthermore, we expect complete recognition for the territorial integrity of the our realm," he emphasized.

Administrative Moves and Geopolitical Interests

The situation were additionally complicated by the recent appointment of a US state governor as a representative to Greenland. The governor had publicly thanked the president, saying it was an "privilege" to serve in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the military action in Venezuela, this representative commended the president's decisive move, linking it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Since returning to office, the American leader has repeatedly unnerved European partners with his stated interest in Greenland. The territory is considered vitally strategic for national security and potential resource extraction. It currently houses the most northerly US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant media appearance, the leader refused to rule out the use of military force to acquire Greenland. This stance comes during intensifying great-power rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Tensions and Local Resistance

In reaction to this constant "rhetoric" of intent, Denmark's intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of both Greenland issued a joint and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a nuanced picture. While a vast majority of the territory's inhabitants seek self-rule from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously scant desire to join the United States. The territory has had the option to seek sovereignty for over a decade.

Expert View: A Credible Scenario?

Some analysts are increasingly re-evaluating the possibility of such a action. One thinktank analyst specializing in military analysis admitted she had previously dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "currently not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to station a couple hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could intervene about it," she concluded.
