Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then located numerous other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state early analysis indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the community for information.
A high-ranking official commented the incident rendered him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
