RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.
The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.
RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."
Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
