EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
