Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
