Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
